O-iApTER

Come in!” Mara called through the door.

George took a deep breath and twisted the knob on Mara’s door. She’d prepared a speech in her head while walking from her dorm to Mara’s, but now that she was about to see Mara, the words vanished. There was nothing good to say and no good way to say it.

Taking a deep breath, George went in. “Hey,” she said as cheerily as she could.

“Hello, George,” Mara said, smiling. Obviously she hadn’t heard about Gary yet. “Are you making the Sunday visiting rounds?” she joked.

“Uh, not exactly,” George replied. She noticed that Mara had a book propped up in front of her and two piles of index cards flanking her on either side. “Are you working on a term paper?” she asked.

Mara sighed. “A monster. The legacy of

World War Two in France. Unfortunately, I’m a little distracted these days. The paper was going great until Friday night.”

George lowered herself onto Mara’s bed. “What was Friday night?” she asked, afraid to hear the answer.

“My first date with Gary,” Mara announced happily. “You know, the one where I realized that dating could be a truly pleasant experience with the right person?”

The grin on Mara’s face was so wide and sincere that George could almost feel her own heart breaking.

She slid closer to Mara’s desk. “Mara, I have something to tell you.”

Mara shut the book that was open in front of her. “Good. I’m open to any form of procrastination,” she joked. “Did you bring any food with you? Chocolate? Want to go see a movie?”

“Mara,” George said soberly, “what I have to tell you is not good.”

Mara’s eyes suddenly narrowed and her lips pursed. “Is anything wrong?”

George nodded. “I have some terrible news. It’s about Gary.”

Mara looked confused. “Gary? What happened?” she asked nervously.

George couldn’t reply.

Mara’s eyes began to moisten. “George, what happened? What are you telling me?”

George blinked away her own tears. She clutched Mara’s hands. “Mara, Gary’s—I don’t know how to say this—but Gary’s dead.”

“What?” Mara cried. She looked at George as if her friend had grown two heads. “What are you talking about, Gary’s dead?” Her face drained of color as George nodded. “Oh my gosh. You’re serious, aren’t you? But how? Why?”

In a shaky voice, George told Mara everything Nancy had told her about Gary being found on the ground outside Plimpton Hall.

Mara stared at her hands. “I can’t believe it. I mean, I know you’re sitting here telling me this, but I swear I don’t believe it. Gary’s so— alive, such a sweet person. I don’t understand.”

George lay a consoling hand on her shoulder. “You’re in shock, Mara. It’s okay. It’s going to take time to process this.” George cleared her throat. “You don’t think that Gary actually would have—” She couldn’t even finish the sentence.

But Mara could. “Jump? Commit suicide?” she said. She shook her head. “I never would have thought so. Never in a million years.” Abruptly, Mara collapsed against George. “This is a nightmare,” she moaned. “Just when I thought—” A loud sob choked off her words.
